The Avery High football team nearly ended Thomas Jefferson’s unbeaten run, but Mac Martin scored on a pair of second-half touchdowns of one-yard runs to help the Gryphons (6-0 overall; 2-0 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference)

escape with a come-from-behind victory. Defensively, Thomas Jefferson held Avery to 174 yards. The Vikings (2-4; 0-1), who lost their fourth staright game, were led by Luke Childress with 132 yards on the ground. 
The Gryphons had 392 yards offensively, including 238 yards on the ground. Martin led Thomas Jefferson with 158 yards on 22 carries. Tyler Polsgrove had two interceptions; Thomas Jefferson and Avery each had three turnovers apiece.
The Vikings try to regroup next Friday night at home against Hendersonville.




West Wilkes dominated the line of scrimmage and time of possession in an easy Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A win at Ashe County. The Blackhawks rushed for 253 yards, controlled the ball for 39 of 48 minutes and had four players — Bryce Mosteller, Tyler Woods, Will Shepherd and Hayden Sutphin — rush for touchdowns. The Huskies (2-4 overall; 1-2 Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference) travel to North Wilkes next Friday night.
