The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the week ending Saturday, Sept. 15. The Citadel teammates Ben Dupree
and Carson Smith have been named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Wofford’s Michael Weimer was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while Samford’s Fabian Truss was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ben Dupree, The Citadel, Jr., QB, Harrisburg, Pa.Junior quarterback Ben Dupree rushed for a career-high 180 yards and two touchdowns as The Citadel topped Appalachian State 52-28 Saturday. He carried 20 times and averaged 9.0 yards per rush with touchdown runs covering 57 and 46 yards. His first TD gave The Citadel a 14-0 lead, while his second score pushed the Bulldogs head 38-7 just 43 seconds prior to halftime. He completed two of his four pass attempts for 56 yards.Other Nominees: Steven Miller (Appalachian State), Thomas Wilson (Elon), Fabian Truss (Samford), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), Eddie Sullivan (Western Carolina) and Eric Breitenstein (Wofford).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Carson Smith, The Citadel, So., LB, Simpsonville, S.C.Linebacker Carson Smith led The Citadel’s defensive effort on Saturday. Midway through the second quarter, the sophomore scooped up a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, he picked off Appalachian State’s Jamal Jackson and returned it 11 yards. Smith added seven tackles in the Bulldogs’ victory.Other Nominees: Jeremy Kimbrough (Appalachian State), Blake Thompson (Elon), Darion Sutton (Samford), Davis Tull (Chattanooga), Nathan Sedergren (Western Carolina) and Stephon Shelton (Wofford).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Michael Weimer, Wofford, Fr., QB, Chapin, S.C.Redshirt Freshman Michael Weimer came on in the second quarter and made an immediate impact for the Terriers as they recorded a 49-20 victory over Western Carolina. The Chapin, S.C., native ran for a 54-yard score on his first offensive series to give the Terriers a 21-7 lead. On the second snap of his third series, he ran for a 73-yard touchdown as Wofford built a 35-7 halftime lead. Weimer finished the game with 141 yards on just six carries and completed one of two pass attempts.Other Nominees: Malachi Jones (Appalachian State), Thuc Phan (Elon), Reese Hannon (Furman), Trey Wesley (Samford), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga) and Spearman Robinson (Western Carolina).
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fabian Truss, Samford, Jr., KR/RB, Birmingham, Ala.Following a Gardner-Webb touchdown that cut Samford’s lead to 21-17 midway through the third quarter, Fabian Truss took the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to help the Bulldogs pull away for a 44-23 win. The 97-yard return was the longest of his career. Truss had three returns for 146 yards Saturday and leads the nation with a 38.25 average. He finished the day with 262 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.
