The tide has turned in recent weeks for the Avery High football team. The Vikings (2-3 overall; 0-1 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference) dropped a 21-6 decision at Black Mountain-Owen in the WHC opener for both teams Friday night.

The Warhorses ran for 325 yards, and running back Jager Gardner ran for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Gardner's 12-yard run with 3:11 to play capped off a ten-play, 65 yard drive and gave the Warhorses (2-3; 1-0) a 21-6 lead. In turn, the Vikings never got on track offensively. They only mustered 78 yards, including 35 on the ground. Luke Childress led the Vikings with 42 rushing yards. Tre Jackson was 6-20 with four interceptions and he was sacked four times. He hooked up with Tyler Potsgrove on a 52-yard scoring pass with 8:52 to play, cutting the lead at 14-6. But Owen responded with a scoring drive of its own on its next possession to win the game.
The Vikings return home to play Thomas Jefferson next Friday night.
