The University of North Carolina men's basketball team opens regular-season play at home against Gardner-Webb on Friday, November 9th, one of 16 games to be played in the Smith Center. In addition to the first-ever 18-game

Atlantic Coast Conference slate, the Tar Heels will play 13 non-conference games. UNC willplay host to Gardner-Webb, Florida Atlantic, UAB, East Tennessee State, East Carolina, McNeese State and UNLV. Former UNC assistant coach Jerod Haase is the head coach at UAB and former Tar Heel captain Jeff Lebo is the head coach at East Carolina.
UNC also plays at Long Beach State, Indiana and Texas and will compete during Thanksgiving week in the EA Sports Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade University.
The Tar Heels will once again be a regular on nationaltelevision as at least 25 games will be featured on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU and the home game against Florida State will be shown on CBS. Additionally, the ACC Network will carry at least four games and broadcast plans for two other games (Gardner-Webb and East Tennessee State) are to be determined.
Carolina will play at least 12 games against teams that played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament - two games each against Duke, Florida State, NC State and Virginia and games against Long Beach, Indiana, Texas and UNLV. UNC could also face 2012 NCAA qualifier Marquette in the Maui semifinals and the Longhorns are on the opposite side of the Maui bracket.
The Tar Heels return to Blomington, Ind., to play the Hoosiers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on November 27th. This is UNC's first appearance at Indiana since the 2004-05 season. Preseason events include the 10th annual "Late Night with Roy Williams" on Friday, October 12th, and an exhibition game against Shaw on Friday, October 26th.
The Tar Heels will play four games in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, beginning with the home game against Florida Atlantic on Sunday, November 11th. Carolina will then fly to California to play LongBeach State on Friday, November 16th, before embarking for Hawaii. UNC opens play in Maui on Monday, November 19th against Mississippi State. Second round opponents are either Butler or Marquette and Chaminade,Illinois, Southern California and Texas are in the other bracket.
ACC play opens Sunday, January 6th at Virginia with the ACC home opener set for Thursday, January 10th against Miami. The ACC Tournament is March 14-17 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
