The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played Saturday, Sept. 8. Appalachian State quarterback Jamal
Jackson has been named the Offensive Player of the Week. Samford free safety Jaquiski Tartt was named Defensive Player of the Week. Furman’s Reese Hannon was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while The Citadel’s Thomas Warren was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jamal Jackson, Appalachian State, Jr., QB, Atlanta, Ga.Jackson accounted for 325 of Appalachian State’s 417 yards of offense as the Mountaineers topped No. 9 Montana, 35-27. The junior signal caller rushed for a career-high 65 yards and a touchdown in the win. He completed 24 of 34 pass attempts for 260 yards and two touchdowns. It was the ninth consecutive game Jackson has recorded at least 250 yards of total offense. With the game tied (21-21) to start the fourth quarter, Jackson engineered two scoring drives to secure the win for the Mountaineers.Other Nominees: Thomas Wilson (Elon), Dominique Swope (Georgia Southern), Fabian Truss (Samford), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), Jacoby Mitchell (Western Carolina) and Brian Kass (Wofford).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaquiski Tartt, Samford, So., FS, Mobile, Ala.Sophomore free safety Jaquiski Tartt was responsible for three turnovers as Samford posted a 34-6 win over West Alabama on Saturday. Tartt picked off two passes, recovered a fumble, and recorded five tackles in the win. Midway through the second quarter, the Mobile, Ala., native recovered a fumbled punt return to set up the Bulldogs at the UWA 35-yard line. That set up Samford’s third touchdown of the game to give the Bulldogs a 21-3 lead. He picked off his first pass later in the second quarter and grabbed a second interception in the fourth quarter after UWA had moved the ball to the Samford 35-yard line. Other Nominees: Brandon Grier (Appalachian State), Rah Muhammad (The Citadel), Blake Thompson (Elon), John Stevenson (Georgia Southern), Gunner Miller (Chattanooga) and Kevin Thomas (Wofford). FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Reese Hannon, Furman, Fr., QB, Greer, S.C.A true freshman, Hannon came off the bench in his collegiate debut and completed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 255 yards and four touchdowns as Furman fell to Coastal Carolina (47-45) in triple overtime. Hannon entered the game just prior to halftime after Dakota Derrick was injured. His 255 yards and four TDs all came in the second half and overtime. Hannon directed the Paladins to touchdowns on Furman’s final six possessions. Trailing 22-12 with under four minutes left, Hannon threw two touchdown passes in the final two minutes to help send the game to overtime.Other Nominees: Sean Price (Appalachian State), Tracey Coppedge (Elon), James Bradberry (Samford), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), Sertonuse Harris (Western Carolina) and Ray Smith (Wofford).
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Thomas Warren, The Citadel, Sr., PK, Mount Pleasant, S.C.Warren connected on a 37-yard field goal with just 35 seconds remaining to lift The Citadel to a 23-21 victory over No. 3 Georgia Southern. Warren was 3-for-3 on the day as he booted a 42-yarder late in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead. The senior connected from 39 yards out in the third quarter to stretch The Citadel’s lead to 20-14. He converted two extra-point attempts in the first quarter as The Citadel staked an early 14-0 lead. Other Nominees: Sam Martin (Appalachian State), Adam Shreiner (Elon), J.J.
