The Avery County Arts Council will soon be no more—emphasis on the ‘soon.’ The arts council’s web site is posting that their board—down to three members—voted to begin the process of closing, and will be out of their building by September 15th and out of business by the end of the month. Caitlan Morehouse, gallery director, said that the organization has sufficient funds to meet the remaining fiscal obligations, and that artists will be paid. What they’re working through, according to Watauga Arts Executive Cherry Johnson, is to transfer as many of the display pieces as possible to gallery space in Watauga, that while working on the legal aspects of closing their books. The site said, “As required by law, any money remaining in Avery Arts Council accounts after expenses are met must be turned over to another non-profit organization.” Morehouse said in the posting that, “The Avery Arts Council has meant many things to many people over the course of its 35 year history. It has been through the commendable efforts of many of you that we have been able to persist and to fulfill the needs in this community.” The move comes just after the Watauga Arts Council and Town of Boone severed ties, forcing the Watauga County Arts Council out of the Jones House on King Street.
