ASU Student Unclear About DNC Arrest Reason PDF Print

An ASU student was the first arrested by the joint law enforcement presence surrounding the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte—23-year old Anna Marie Wright pulled from a march after determining to have a knife in her possession.“A couple of people in my group told me that they were screaming, like, ‘she has a weapon, she has a weapon,’ and then I was like immediately taken away from the march, like, over to some side street behind a police truck.” Wright said that, finally, police told her why she had been arrested, “they saw in my back pocket next to my bandana and my map an ‘Exacto’ knife.”
Wright also had pulled a bandana up to her nose, but took it down when so ordered by police, “Apparently it’s become a new ordinance that I was unaware of, but even so, the officer asked me to take it down and immediately I took it down.”
The dispatches from Charlotte Mecklenburg for the press on law enforcement activity with the Democratic National Convention set to get underway listed Wright and a Chris Wright Stephens as arrested first and second on Sunday, but they were not together and the arrests were not at the same location.  Stephens was charged with Assault on a Government Official, Resisting, and Disorderly Conduct. Wright said she was not there to protest a specific issue, but was there to support a number of issues.
