SoCon Announces Football Players of the Week PDF Print

The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played Thursday, Aug. 30, and Saturday, Sept. 1. Wofford’s Eric Breitenstin was named Offensive Player of the Week while The Citadel’s Chris

Billingslea earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Troy Mitchell of Western Carolina was selected as the Freshman of the Week, and Appalachian State’s Sam Martin was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eric Breitenstein, Wofford, Sr., RB, Valle Crucis, N.C.Breitenstein rushed for 219 yards on 22 carries as Wofford defeated Gardner-Webb 34-7 Saturday night.  The senior back scored a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter and added a second score from 19 yards out in the fourth.  With 219 rushing yards, Breitenstein moved into second place on Wofford’s all-time rushing list.  It was the fourth time in his career he topped the 200-yard plateau and the 119th time a SoCon player topped 200 yards.Other Nominees: Jamal Jackson (Appalachian State), Rickey Anderson (The Citadel), Jerodis Williams (Furman), Ezayi Youyoute (Georgia Southern), Andy Summerlin (Samford), Faysal Shafaat (Chattanooga) and Troy Mitchell (Western Carolina).

 


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Billingslea, The Citadel, Sr., DE, Fort Mill, S.C.Billingslea helped anchor The Citadel’s defense, which held Charleston Southern to just 70 yards in the second half as the Bulldogs claimed a 49-14 win.  The senior defensive lineman tallied eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and two pass break-ups in the win.  Billingslea forced a fumble early in the third quarter which set up a Citadel touchdown to put the Bulldogs up for good, 21-14.  On the ensuing CSU possession, the Fort Mill, S.C., native batted down two passes to force a punt before the Bulldogs added another score.Other Nominees: Troy Sanders (Appalachian State), Chandler Wrightenberry (Elon), Valdon Cooper (Georgia Southern), Alvin Hines II (Samford), D.J. Key (Chattanooga), Ace Clark (Western Carolina) and Blake Wylie (Wofford).

 


FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Troy Mitchell, Western Carolina, Fr., QB, Mobile, Ala.Mitchell became the third true freshman to start at quarterback for the Catamounts since 1992 and helped the Catamounts open the season with a 42-14 win over Mars Hill last Thursday.  Mitchell completed 20 of 29 passes for 149 yards and two TDs.  The Mobile, Ala., native also rushed for 38 yards and two scores.Other Nominees: Malachi Jones (Appalachian State), Vinny Miller (The Citadel), Patrick Flowe (Georgia Southern), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), and Cam Flowers (Wofford).

 


SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Martin, Appalachian State, Sr., P, Fayetteville, Ga.A first team all-conference performer last year, Martin continued his strong play with a solid outing Saturday at East Carolina.  The senior averaged 45.2 yards per punt on six attempts and only allowed one return.  The Fayetteville, Ga., native placed two punts inside the ECU 20-yard line and had a long of 53 yards.  Martin also handled the kickoff duties for the Mountaineers and averaged 61.7 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks.Other Nominees: Kenton Beal (Elon), Ryan Nowicki (Georgia Southern), Cameron Yaw (Samford), Nick Pollard (Chattanooga), Richard Sigmon (Western Carolina) and Christian Reed (Wofford).
