ASU Field Hockey Defeats Saint Louis, 3-2 PDF Print

Appalachian State University field hockey picked up its first win of the 2012 season, defeating Saint Louis, 3-2. The Apps took a quick 1-0 lead over the Billikens when freshman Caroline Phillips scored her first career goal off a pass

from sophomore Jessi Stuart. Phillips found the back of the net when she received a pass on the left side and shot into the top right corner of the cage.
The Black and Gold took the 2-0 advantage over Saint Louis when Phillips fed senior Casey Lammando a pass from the middle off a penalty corner and Lammando scored on a shot from the left side of the circle. Appalachian capitalized on their second penalty corner of the afternoon when Phillips passed to sophomore Dana Wetmore on the left side of the circle. Wetmore netted her first goal of the season, allowing the Mountaineers to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Saint Louis scored its first goal of the match late in the first half coming within two of Appalachian. The Billikens continued its comeback in the second half as Megan Rogers scored off a penalty corner, but it would not be enough as the Apps would go on to a 3-2 victory. Phillips ended the afternoon with one goal and two assists, while senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson picked up her first win of the season with 10 saves.
Appalachian had nine shots on goal and five penalty corners, capitalizing on two. With the win the Mountaineers improve to 1-3 overall on the season, while the Billikens fall to 0-5 overall on the season. Appalachian State will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Penn. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
