WHS Volleyball Wins NW3A/4A Opener PDF Print

The Watauga High volleyball team continued its domination in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference with a 3-1 win against St. Stephens on the road Thursday night. The Pioneers put the contest away with a 25-20 win in game four.

Kristen Carter paced WHS (5-1; 1-0 NW3A/4A) with 36 assists. Channing Hagaman had 23 kills and 19 digs, Ashlyn Van Dyke had 34 digs, Meredith Farthing had 34 digs and five aces, Emily Hinshaw had 29 digs and seven aces. Rebacca Hayes had 14 kills and eight blocks, Andrea Foster had nine blocks.
The JV team (5-1; 1-0 NW3A/4A) won its conference opener with a 2-1 win. The Pioneers posted back-to-back victories (25-16 in game two and 25-19 in game three) after they dropped the opening set, 25-23. Sarah Combs paced WHS with 18 assists and seven aces; Blake Byrd had nine kills; Keirston McClannon had eight kills and 12 digs, and Abby Hicks had five aces and 12 digs. The Pioneers travel to Newton to play Fred T. Foard next Tuesday night.
The Pioneers will host a tri-match with Cornelius-Hough and McDowell next Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lentz-Eggers Gym.

WHS JV FOOTBALL WINS THIRD STRAIGHT

 


The Watauga High junior varsity football team won its third consecutive game by belting Avery 36-15 Thursday night in Newland. The Pioneers (3-0) punched it in on their first two possessions, and added another score on their  first possession of the second half to take control of the game. Watauga is averaging nearly 30-points a game, took a commanding 23-7 lead at halftime and coasted home.
Quarterback Aaron Dobbins threw three touchdown passes and scored once. He hooked up with Anthony Deiters twice---on a 20-yard toss and a 35-yard score---and Michael Ebaugh. Deiters also had an interception that set up another WHS TD. Dobbins, who completed his first six passes for 75 yards, also scored on a one-yard run just before halftime. Nathan Ford scored on a one-yard run in the first half.
Dobbins also threw a pair of two-point conversion passes to Ebaugh and Justin Greer. The Pioneers play at West Caldwell next Thursday night.
