Smokey Mountain sophomore quarterback Zeb Speir, a former Watauga High Pioneer who left when his father, Mark, was named the new football coach at Western Carolina University, suffered a sprained neck in his varsity debut Friday,

August 17 against Cherokee. Speir sat out Friday night's game against defending NCHSAA 1-AA champion Swain County.
Speir suffered the injury following a late hit in the first quarter of last Friday’s 32-21 loss at Cherokee. At the time of the injury, Speier had thrown for 81 yards and a touchdown.
