Arizona State is down to one assistant coach Suddenly, Herb Sendek at Arizona State -- where classes began Thursday -- finds himself down to one assistant after two sidemen left the school a

remarkable two days in a row. Perhaps he'll scare himself out of showing up at the office Friday for fear of being the only sailor left to man the ship's wheel. The only man left: Dedrique Taylor, who has been alongside Sendek for the entirety of his Sun Devils tenure, since the 2006-07 season.
First it was Scott Pera, the four-year assistant from the East Coast (Pennsylvania, specifically) who took on an opportunity in the Ivy League, joining up at Penn next to Jerome Allen. He left because he'll be the No. 1 assistant for the Quakers and also because nothing tugs quite like home.
Thursday's news? Double the sting, not only because another assistant is gone, but also because he's leaving for intra-conference work. Lamont Smith will be on Washington's bench in 2012-13. There's a tie there too, naturally. Smith got his start in the business thanks to Romar, who brought him on staff more than a decade ago when he was at Saint Louis.
