SoCon Releases Preseason Cross Country Polls PDF Print

Appalachian State University men’s cross-country was tabbed to finish second in the annual Southern Conference preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Thursday. The reigning 2011

SoCon Champions, UNCG, received nine first-place votes and 99 points to finish at the top of the poll. The Spartans return 2011 SoCon Runner of the Year and All-American Paul Chelimo and 2011 SoCon Freshman of the Year Paul Katam to their roster.
The Mountaineers were picked to finish second with 86 points, edging out 2011 runner-up Davidson by five points. The Wildcats received the other two first-place votes in the poll.
App State returns senior leaders Michael Lilley, Will Raby, and Alex Taylor, as well as Sean Soderman who was injured for the 2011 season. Furman was voted to finish fourth with 76 points, while Chattanooga received 65 points for a fifth place spot.
Western Carolina (54), Elon (49), Samford (31), College of Charleston (30), Wofford (18) and The Citadel (16) rounded out the remaining six spots in the preseason poll.
Appalachian will open their 2012 season on Aug. 31 when it runs in the Covered Bridge Open. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Appalachian State University women’s cross-country was projected to finish third in Southern Conference preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Thursday.
Elon was chosen to finish first in the SoCon this season after receiving 115 points and seven first place votes. The Phoenix finished third in the SoCon in 2011 and return top runner Allyson Oram. The reining SoCon Champion, UNCG, received 103 points and two first-place votes, placing them second in preseason rankings.
The Mountaineers are projected to finish third with 99 points and one first place vote. Seniors Amanda Hamilton and Sarah Williamson, who ran in all seven meets in the 2011 season, will lead App State in its 2012 campaign.
Furman, who received the final two first place votes, placed fourth with 88 points, while Samford is fifth with 84 points. Davidson (67), Western Carolina (61), College of Charleston (55), Chattanooga (48), Wofford (35), Georgia Southern (20) and The Citadel (17) rounded out the remainder of the preseason poll.
Appalachian is set to start the 2012 season on Aug. 31 when it runs in the Covered Bridge Open. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
