UNCG freshman goalkeeper Jamie Simmons has been named the Southern Conference’s women’s soccer player of the week for all matches Aug. 17-20. In her collegiate debut, Simmons flirted with a decade-old school record in registering

14 saves in UNCG’s 1-0, double-overtime loss at Georgia on Friday. Her lone blemish came on a penalty kick in the 104th minute of action as the Bulldogs escaped with the win. The Houston, Texas, native was tested often, facing 27 shots and 10 corner kicks on the night. Simmons posted four saves in the first half, seven in the second and three in overtime in falling just one save shy of the school record set by Kathryn Clewley in 2001. Stepping into the starting role vacated by four-year All-Southern Conference keeper Kelsey Kearney, Simmons performed admirably, becoming the Spartans’ first freshman to be named SoCon player of the week since teammate Lauren Hein did so on Sept. 22, 2009. UNCG takes on No. 3 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday at 7 p.m. Also nominated: Amy Kolowsky (Appalachian State), Sarah Cardamone (College of Charleston), Hannah Stanifer (Furman), Katie Merson (Georgia Southern), Skylar Brewer (Chattanooga) and Maureen Buff (Wofford).
