The Watauga High women's tennis team battled the weather and a stingy opponent in Mount Airy Monday night on the road. But in the end, the Pioneers (2-0) prevailed as they knocked off the Bears 5-4 in a non-conference match.

And Emily Burwell played a huge role in the win. Burwell picked up a win at No.5 singles that tied the match at 3-3. She defeated Bree Hughes of the Bears in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Then she teamed up  with Hannah Petersen at No.2 doubles to win the clinching match. Petersen and Burwell knocked off Jordan Jackson and Hughes, 10-1.
"It was a huge win for us," said first-year coach Anna DeChellis. "the weather was crazy, but our girls battled through it. Emily's win in singles was big for us, and the girls pulled it out in doubles play. It was a good win for us on the road."
Meredith Smith picked upa win at No.1 singles; Petersen won her match at No.2; Peterson and Nicole Fox teamed up for a win at No.1 doubles. They knocked off Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas of the Bears, 10-3. That gave WHS a 4-3 lead and set the stage for Burwell and Petersen.
Addi Hall and Jessica Benyon won their exhibition doubles match. The Pioneers return home to play Pfafftown-Reagan in a make up match today at 4:30 p.m. at the Sports Complex. That match was postponed last Wednesday.
