Vikings Upend Mitchell PDF Print

Avery snapped a three-game losing streak against Mitchell, as Ty Polsgrove snatched a Mountaineer pass to preserve a 20-13 Viking victory Friday night in Ledger. Luke Childress ran for 75 yards, including a one yard plunge in the second quarter to give Avery the lead. Coach Darrell Brewer reached deep into his bag of tricks for Avery's second score, with

the Vikings executing a fake field goal, as Stetson Stafford connected with Austin Robbie on a 23-yard touchdown pass. A successful 2-point conversion spotted Avery (1-0) a 14-0 halftime lead.
Avery extended its lead early in the third quarter when Tre Jackson found Stafford to make it a 20-0 Viking advantage  Mitchell roared back with 13 second half points, opening scoring when Gage Parkins dove 1-yard to cut the Avery advantage to 20-7.  Mitchell drew within seven when Parkins found Ryan McKinney for a 17-yard score with under five minutes remaining.
The Vikings held on, sealing it with the Polsgrove pick on the final Mountaineer possession to earn the victory. The Vikings will host West Wilkes in non-conference action next Friday evening, August 24. Avery High plans to dedicate its press box at MacDonald Stadium after former WECR-AM personality and Viking P.A. Announcer Jim Greene on that evening. Game time in Newland is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. on Mix102.3 FM.


Hampton Wins Coaching Debut


There's no place like home. Just aske Ashe County coach Brian Hampton, who won his coaching debut Friday night as the Ashe County High football team opened the season with a 20-14 win against West Caldwell Friday night. Kolton Pilar's interception return for a touchdown proved to be the difference. Quarterback Eli Gambill scored a touchown and threw a touchdown pass in the win. The Huskies (1-0) take on Watauga at Jack Groce Stadium next Friday night.
