The Hickory Crawdads got the game-tying run to second base in the bottom of the ninth, but the Savannah Sand Gnats hung on and won the game 6-5 at L.P. Frans Stadium Thursday night. The loss also knocked Hickory 1 1/2 games out of first place in the North Division of the South Atlantic League. Hickory got the tying run on base in the bottom of the

ninth with one out. Pinch hitter Luis Sardinas singled his way on and swiped second base. But T.J. Chism, who picked up his 18th save of the year, retired the next two batters closing things out for Savannah. Kevin Torres had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that made it 6-5, But the 'Dads found themselves playing from behind the majority of the night.
They trailed 3-1 in the top of the third before they jumped on top for a brief spell in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 3-2, the Crawdads tallied twice in the bottom of the sixth. Drew Robinson walked to start the inning before he scored on an RBI triple by Alejandro Selen that tied up the game. One out later, Selen sprinted home on a sacrifice fly by Torres that gave Hickory a 4-3 lead.
But Savannah reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh.  With two on and nobody out, Yucarybert De La Cruz connected for a three-run homer that proved to be the difference in the game. That blow gave Savannah a 6-4 lead.
Jose Monegro (2-1), who was on the receiving end of De La Cruz's three-run blast, suffered the loss. Trever Adams of the 'Dads was 2-4 with a pair of doubles; Torres knocked in two runs in the loss.
