Munroe’s Run Ends At U.S. Amateur Championships PDF Print

College of Charleston sophomore Zach Munroe played a hard fought match, but came up short as he dropped his Round of 16 match by two strokes to Steven Fox Thursday at the Cherry Hills Country Club. Munroe tied for the best finish at

a U.S. Amateur Championship in CofC men's golf history as he equaled All-American Bruce McDonalds's finish from the 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship.
The match started out very even until Fox carried a 1 up lead from the sixth hole through the 11th hole. On the 12th hole Munroe got it back to all square and went 1 up on the 13th hole. Fox would get it back to all square on the 15th hole and won the 17th and 18th holes to win the match.
Munroe advanced to the round of 16 with a 2&1 victory over Todd White earlier in the day. Munroe was either all square or one down until the par-3 15th hole where he pared the hole and White made bogey. Munroe maintained his lead on the 16th hole and then went two up on the par-5 17th hole as he birdied the hole and White made bogey, which ended the match.
"I'm extremely proud of the way Zach played this week," CofC head coach Mark McEntire said. "He represented our school and program very well and we are looking forward to welcoming him back as we get ready to start our season."
The Cougars open the season by hosting the Invitational at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island Sept. 9-11.
