Appalachian State University volleyball was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference North Division when the league released its annual preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday. The Mountaineers, who finished
last season in second place in the North, received a total of two first-place votes behind division-favorite and defending SoCon Tournament champion Samford, which received 10 first-place nods. Elon tallied 41 points as it was selected to finish third. UNCG was picked to finish fourth while Chattanooga and Western Carolina finished in a fifth-place tie.
In the South Division, defending regular-season champion College of Charleston was picked first with six first-place votes to finish just two total points ahead of Furman, which received three first-place votes. Georgia Southern followed closely behind with three first-place nods of its own.
The bottom half of the South was rounded out by Davidson, Wofford and The Citadel.
In addition to the preseason coaches poll the conference also announced the preseason all-SoCon team with Samford tallying a league-high three selections while Furman notched two preseason honors of its own. All 12 SoCon volleyball squads begin their seasons next weekend in regular-season tournament action around the country and conference play begins on Sept. 20.
App State opens its season at the James Madison Days Inn Invitational Aug. 24-25 and will host North Carolina A&T in the home-opener at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18.
