The Watauga High men's soccer team picked up right where it left off last season. WHS (1-0), known for its stingy defense, knocked off Ashe County 2-1 Monday night in the season opener for both teams at Husky Stadium in West Jefferson. Logan Raichle and Alex Parsons did all the scoring for the Pioneers. Raichle scored the game's first goal at

the 25-minute mark of the first half; Parson's picked up an assist on the play.
"Logan shot it from 40-yards out," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "He had a lot on that shot and their (goal)keeper couldn't handle it."
Parson gave WHS an insurance goal at 41-minute mark of the second half. Raichle picked up the assist. The Huskies scored with a little less than ten minutes to play, but the Pioneers hung on.
"It was a good defensive effort," McKay said. "We hung tough and protected the lead. It was a nice win on the road."
The Pioneers return home to play Wilkes Central Wednesday night. The JV team won 1-0. Chase Palm scored the game's only goal.
The Watauga High women's tennis team was scheduled to play Mount Tabor Monday night, but there was some confusion between the schools. The Pioneers had scheduled the match for Monday night, but the Spartans thought they were suppose to play on Wednesday. According to interim coach Scott Taylor, the teams were hoping to get the match in today, but no official announcement has been made by the WHS athletic department.
