Rising seniors Peter Vandenberg and Darby Middlebrook of Watauga High have been ranked by among the top-ten runners in the state among all classifications. Vandenberg, who battled a foot injury last spring and

missed the entire outdoor track season, is ranked tenth on the men's side.
Vandenberg finished eighth in the Class 4A state championship race at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C., last November. Vandenberg finished the race in 16:02.33. Teammate and rising senior Josh Anderson is ranked 13th. He finished 13th at the state finals last fall and helped the Pioneers to a sixth-place finish overall.
"We'll be senior dominated on the men's side this season," said WHS coach Randy McDonough. "Peter is coming around with that injury. He's participated in all of our practices, so far. He isn't 100% as of yet, but he's getting there. I expect him to compete in our first race of the year (the Pioneers Clash of the Classes on Saturday, August 18 in Boone)."
Darby Middlebrook, who finished second at the state meet last fall, is currently ranked second among all classifications by NCRunners on the women's side. Middlebrook, who won the Class 4A state title as a sophomore in 2010, still ran a strong race last fall. She covered the course in 17:42.25. Ironically, she was dethroned by Samantha George of Raleigh-Millbrook (currently a rising freshman at North Carolina State), the same women she beat to win the title a year earlier. George won the race in the course-record time of 17:27.19, shattering Middlebrook's record of 17:52.16 the previous year.
Madison Harman of the Pioneers is ranked 19th. WHS opens the season with the Pioneers Clash of the Classes in Boone on Saturday, September 18.
