The Panthers have released running back Armond Smith, claimed off waivers from Cleveland in May. The Panthers are expected to sign linebacker David Nixon, a fifth-year linebacker from Brigham Young whoparticipated in the team's rookie camp in May. Nixon would be the 10th linebacker on the Panthers' 90-man roster. General manager Marty Hurney

said earlier this week the team wanted to take 10 linebackers to Spartanburg. Nixon, 27, has spent time with three teams in three years. He played in eight games last year with St. Louis, finishing with six tackles and two forced fumbles.
The Panthers reported to Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., on Friday. Their first practice was Saturday evening.
