Rising Elon junior men's golfer Jack Adkins was one of three competitors who qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship in 36-hole qualifying conducted on July 23 at the Kingsmill Resort's River Course.  The U.S. Amateur Championship is scheduled for August 13-19 at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. Adkins shot

a blistering nine-under par 62 in his morning round and followed that up with a 75 in his afternoon round.  He was one of four golfers to finish the day with a 137 and advanced on the third playoff hole with a par.
"It was one of those days when I played well," said Adkins.  "It's definitely the highlight of my summer.  I'm very excited."
Adkins recorded eight birdies and an eagle in the morning round.  He shot a three-under 33 on the front nine before beginning the back nine with two birdies and capped the surge by holing out his 58-degree wedge shot from 80 yards for an eagle at the par-five 12th hole.  He added birdies at both holes 16 and 18 to shoot a personal-best round.  His score came within a stroke of matching the competitive course record of 61.
With Elon in 2011-12, Adkins averaged a 77.68 over 19 rounds of play.  His low round of 72 came on the first day of the Southern Conference Championship. The U.S. Amateur Championship, open to amateur golfers who hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4, is one of 13 championships conducted by the USGA.  Ten are strictly for amateurs.
