Vikings To Honor Greene In Home Opener PDF Print

Avery High School has announced it will dedicate and rename its press box at MacDonald Stadium after the late Jim Greene, who passed away in January. Greene, a minister in Avery County and the morning personality on WECR 1130 AM Radio, did public address anouncing for all Vikings home football

and basketball games.  The dedicating and renaming of the press box, which is currently being remodeled by the school, will be held on Friday night, August 24 when the Vikings play their home opener against West Wilkes.
The Avery athletic department has also annouced their Derrick Calloway has been named the school's new wrestling coach. Calloway, who graduated from Avery High in 2004, has been the wrestling coach at Alleghany the last two seasons.
Calloway was a standout heavyweight wrestler in high school and wrestled at ASU. He wrestled for Matthew Bentley at Avery, and for Bentley's younger brother JohnMark at ASU (then an assistant and now the head coach of the Mountaineers). Calloway also worked two years in the Mitchell County school system as assistant coach at Mitchell High School and with the county’s youth recreational wrestling club.
