Former Hickory High girls’ basketball star Jada Payne is leaving LaSalle University and transferring to East Carolina this fall. Payne, a rising sophomore who played one season at LaSalle, still has three years of eligibility

remaining. But under NCAA transfer rules, she must sit out one season before she can suit up for the Pirates.
“I am excited to join the Pirate Nation,” Payne said in an East Carolina news release on Wednesday. “East Carolina has everything I was looking for in terms of academic excellence and a great athletic program.”
Payne, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged nine points and four rebounds a game at LaSalle her freshman year. LaSalle was 14=17 last season. Payne was second on the team in three-point field goals (42) and was named to the Atlantic 10 Conhference All-Freshman team.
Payne played in all 31 games (she started in 26 of those games) at LaSalle last year as a true freshman. She earned rookie of the week honors twice in the A-10, and she led the Explorers in scoring five times. Payne poured in 15 points in her college debut, a 63-43 win against Lehigh.
During her senior year at Hickory, Payne led the Red Tornadoes the Class 3A state championship game and a 28-3 record. Payne was the Player of the Year in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference her senior year, and she also earned Most Valuable Player honors at regionals. Hickory lost to South Central in overtime in 2010-11, but Payne was named to the Associated Press’ all-state team.
