Alexander Central High is adding three assistant coaches who will help its varsity offense transition from running the spread to the triple option. New Cougars head coach Nick Bazzle, who ran the triple option as head coach at Newton-Conover, said Friday he’s hired two assistants who were with him at Newton-Conover and another former Red Devils

assistant. The hirings are pending approval by the Alexander County Schools Board of Education at a July 24 meeting, Matt Wilson will join the Cougars to coach quarterbacks and Greg Hardy will come aboard to coach offensive linemen. Bazzle has already added Charlie Lloyd, who was a longtime assistant at Newton-Conover before head-coaching stints at East Lincoln and FredT. Foard. Lloyd is retired and teaching driver’s education in Caldwell County, Bazzle said.
Bazzle has been busy getting ready for his first season at Alexander Central. Mini-camp begins on July 23, and Bazzle said the Cougars had 60 players in a three-day camp at Wofford College. Bazzle’s coaching staff will total 14 -- at least seven of them graduates of Alexander Central – for a team that is coming off a 6-6 finish last season. Bazzle’s debut as Alexander Central’s head coach comes Aug. 17 at North Iredell.
