Former Elon University quarterback Scott Riddle, the all-time leading passer in Southern Conference history, has been released by the Montreal Alouttes of the Canadian Football League. Riddle who signed with Montreal on May 15, led the SoCon in passing yardage in all four of his seasons from 2007-10 and graduated as the holder of 41 NCAA, SoCon or

He also made a tackle in his only preseason appearance against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Marques Murrell, who starred at Appalachian State University, has officially made the Alouettes' opening-day roster. And he will be joined by fellow Mountaineer, defensive back Ed Gainey. Murrell, the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, and the SoCon Male Athlete of the Year that season, had two tackles, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble in two exhibtiion games; Gainey, who played in one preseason game, had three tackles Tuesday night against the Toronto Argonauts.
Murrell and Gainey will make their CFL regular-season debuts Sunday, July 1, when the Alouettes travel to Calgary to play the Stampeders. Quarterback Ricky Santos, who starred at New Hampshire and won the Walter Payton Award in 2006, was released by Argonauts on Thursday. It's the second time Santos has been released in 11 days. The Alouettes released him on June 9. Santos played in the CFL five years.
