The Watauga High athletic program should petition the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to rename the Wachovia Conference Cup the "Watauga Conference Cup". And it wouldn't be shelfish to ask. Afterall, the Pioneers won the Northwestern 3A/4A Wachovia Conference Cup by besting the field with 198 points. Hickory finished a distant
second with 177 points; Alexander Central finished third. And dating back to the 1996-97 season, the Pioneers have practically owned the conference cup. They have won it 15 times in the last 16 years, which includes a stretch of nine in a row.
A.C. Reynolds was the last team to nose out WHS for the cup title in the 2002-03 season. The WHS athletic department produced seven conference titles this season. Four of those titles came during the fall sports season. The Pioneers won league titles in women's tennis, men's and women's cross country championships and volleyball. The Pioneers also received a pair of second-place finishes from the football team and the men's soccer program.
WHS also won three league titles in the spring. The Pioneers captured league titles in men's and women's track, and in men's tennis. The women's soccer team finished third and the baseball team turned in a second-place finish.
