Hickory's eight-game winning streak is over. The Charleston RiverDogs saw to that Tuesday night as they took the opening game of the series against the Crawdads at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The RiverDogs (35-22) grabbed a 6-0 lead by the third inning and pounded the Crawdads,
Losing pitcher Nick Martinez (2-2), who was selected for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game earlier in the day, was roughed up for six earned runs on six hits in just four innings. The Crawdads (31-26), who made three errors (the RiverDogs made two errors) finally got on the board in the top of the fourth.
Zach Cone singled and moved to second on a walk to Jeremy Williams. Both runners moved up to second and third on a ground out before a fielding error by shortstop Cito Culver allowed Cone to score. The Crawdads picked up another run in the top of the sixth, but they squandered an excellent scoring opportunity as they left the bases loaded. Leading 7-2, Fred Lewis posted back-to-back strikeouts. Jhonny Gomez walked to force in a run, but Lewis got out of the inning with no further damage being done.
Williams was Hickory's most productive hitter, going 3-4 with a run-batted-in; Cone was 1-5 and scored twice; Hanser Alberto was 2-5 with a pair of doubles and he scored a run. Evan Rutckj (2-2) got the win for Charleston. He went five innings and gave up an earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
