The Watauga Junior American Legion team picked up its first wins of the year Monday night by taking a double-header from McDowell---the same team that victimized Watauga in its season opener on May 25. Watauga won the opener,

8-0; and won the night cap, 3-0. The Junior Legion team (2-3-1 overall; 2-2 District play) received two marvelous pitching performances in the double-header sweep.
Jesse Illich tossed a three hit shutout in the opener. He struck out four and walked two. He also helped his own cause with a single, a double, two runs scored, a stolen base and a run-batted-in. Tyler Sturgill had had base hit, scored two runs and drove in two runs; Hunter Isaacs had a base hit, scored run and had an RBI; Carson Isaacs had a single, scored a run and drove in two runs.
Adam Greene got the win in game two. He tossed a one-hit shutout, but he walked four and struck out two. Jesse Illich had a single, two stolen bases, scored a run and drove in a run. Matt Lambert had two hits and drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
"We're playing good defense right now, and our pitching has been pretty solid," said Watauga coach Bradley Rudisill. "We just have to keep it up. We've evened up our record in league play, and I've been pleased with our progress, so far."
Watauga, which plays three games in four days, travels to South Caldwell for a double header Saturday at 12 noon.
