The Hickory Crawdads cruised to their eighth straight win, setting a season-high for runs in a game in the process as they blasted Kannapolis 14-5 in a businessman speical at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday afternoon. Zach Cone backboned the onslaught with a season-high five runs-batted-in. The Crawdads (31-25) didn't waste any time taking the lead, and
practically putting the game to rest with a five-run explosion in the first inning. Chris Grayson and Hanser Alberto had consecutive singles to start the inning before Cone drove in his first run of the game with a single to right-center field. Jeremy Williams followed with a towering two-run double giving Hickory a 3-0 lead. A passed ball moved Williams to third and one out later, Jordan Akins reached on an RBI grounder to the right side of the infield, scoring Williams. A two-base fielding error on the play allowed Akins to reach second base. He scored moments later on an RBI single by Kellin Deglan.
Grant Buckner homered for Kannapolis in the top of the second, but the Crawdads increased their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back walks to start the inning to Alberto and Cone chased losing pitcher Jefferson Olacio (1-3). Jarrett Casey came on in relief, and he recorded the first out of the inning on a meaningless fly ball. But Drew Robinson doubled into the right-field corner scoring Alberto for the 6-1 lead; Cone moved to third on the play. And he scored on Cone's sacrifice fly for the 7-1 lead.
A solo shot by Cyle Hankerd of the Power in the top of the third made it 7-2, but the Crawdads added three more runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Grayson and Alberto singled and walked, respectively, putting two men on. Cone brought both runners home with a two-run double making it 9-2. A run-scoring single by Williams gave Hickory a commanding 10-2 after three innings.
Leading 10-4, Hickory scored four more times. Robinson homered, making it 11-4 in the sixth; Cone belted a two-run double in the seventh that made it 13-4; and a sacrifice fly by Deglan in the eighth closed out the scoring, giving Hickory a 14-4 advantage.
Grayson had two hits and scored three runs; Cone had three hits, including two doubles and drive in five runs; Williams had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Robinson, Aikns and Deglen had two RBI apiece. Jerad Eickhoff (5-4) went five innings and picked up his fifth win of the year; he gave up four runs, two earned on six hits with four strikeouts.
