Thanks to a four-run rally in the fourth inning, the Fred T. Foard softball team wiped out a 2-0 deficit and defeated North Iredell 4-2 Thursday night in the opening round of the Class 3A Western Regional Finals in Newton. The win

gives the Tigers a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series. Game two will be played tonight in Olin beginning at 6 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played in Newton Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The two runs Foard gave up Thursday night were the first runs the Tigers have given up in the state playoffs. Four hits and a pair of walks fueled Foard's (24-4) rally in the fourth inning. Cierra Shull's two-run single gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. North Iredell (22-5) had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. But with a runner at first and one out, Lexi Shubert, who had 12 strikeouts and scattered five hits, put things to rest with a strikeout and a ground ball to end the game.
