Matt Proffitt and Ryan Turner of Watauga High have been selected to play in the East-West Senior All-Star Game at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, Wednesday, June 13. It will be a double-header with the first game beginning at 4 p.m. and the second game starting at 8 p.m. There will be a hone-run hitting contest between games. Proffitt, who shared

Player of the Year honors in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference with Garrison Franklin of South Caldwell and Davis Hanvey of Hickory, batted .350 with a team-leading three home runs, four doubles, and 20 runs-batted-in. As WHS' No.2 starter this season, Proffitt, a right hander, was 6-2 with a pair of saves. Defensively, he turned in a solid season in center field. He will attend Brevard College, a Division III school in Brevard, N.C., where he will play baseball next season.
Turner, who will attend Naval Academy this fall (he departs for Annapolis, Md., at the end of June), was an all-NW3A/4A Conference selection. He batted .357 with a home run and nine RBI; he scored 27 runs, he had three doubles and seven stolen bases. Turner, an all-conference second baseman in 2011, split time between shortstop and second base this season. He filled in at shortstop when fellow senior Max Linnville went down with a nagging hamstring injury.
Mike Lovelace of Mount Tabor will coach the West squad. WHS coach Pete Hardee will be an assistant coach in the North Carolina State Games. Hardee will be an assistant with District 7; rising senior Tyler Jones, who batted .341 with a team-leading eight doubles and ten stolen bases, will play for the District 7 All-Stars.
Region 7 begins state competition on June 13 against Region 1; the consolation games will be played Sunday, June 17, at Kernersville-Glenn; the medal games that day will be played at WFU.
NOTES: Nicole Dollar of the Watauga High softball team was named Honorable Mention All-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference; the WHS women's soccer team did not have any Honorable-Mention players.
