The Hickory Crawdads and the Kannapolis Intimidators earned a split on Monday at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Crawdads won the opener 5-1 in seven innings, but Kannapolis won the second game, 4-1. The second game was called after
5 1/2 innings because of rain. In the opener, the Crawdads (20-22), who snapped an eight-game losing streak behind a strong pitching performance by Luke Jackson (3-4), defeated the Intimidators, 5-1. Jackson went 6 2/3 innings and gave up an earned run on one hit with nine striketouts, Mark Haddow belted a solo home run off Jackson in the sixth inning, spoiling his no-hit bid and breaking up the shutout.
The Crawdads gave Jackson an early cushion to work with as they scored twice in the opening frame and three more times in the second inning. Zach Cone gave Hickory a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the first; the Crawdads increased their advantage with three more runs in the second inning.
An RBI single by Trever Adams made it 3-0; Jordan Akins scored on a delayed double steal and Luis Sardinas had a run-scoring double that gave Hickory a commanding 5-0 lead.
In game two, Matthew Lane (2-0) gave up two hits as Kannapolis (17-26) defeated Hickory 4-1 in a rain-shortened, five-inning game. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning, the Intimidators rallied to take the lead as they scored four times. Mark Haddow singled to start the inning and Rangel Ravelo walked putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Leighton Pangilinan tied the game with an RBI double to left field. Keenyn Walker walked to load the bass, and Garis Pena smacked a two-run, one-out single that gave the Intimidators a 3-1 lead. Kannapolis scored another run, thanks to an error that made it 4-1.
The game was delayed 35 minutes by rain in the bottom of the sixth inning before the umpires called the game.
The Crawdads and Intimidators square off for another doubleheader on Tuesday at L.P. Frans Stadium. The doubleheader will feature two seven-inning games, with Game 1 starting at 4 p.m. and Game 2 starting no earlier than 6 p.m. One ticket is good for both games, and gates will open at 3 p.m......Tuesday's doubleheader is also Dollar Day, presented by 1290 WHKY!
