Freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) headlines a group of five Lees-McRae College student-athletes on the 2012 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Outdoor Women's Track & Field
all-Southeast Region team, announced USTFCCCA officials Wednesday. Thornton was joined on the all-region team by Rachelle Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.), Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.), Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.), and Taylor Pritchett (Apex, N.C.).
A native of Millville, N.J., Thornton garnered all-region recognition in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, after winning the 400-meter competition and finishing third in the 100-meter race at the Conference Carolinas Championships earlier this spring. Pritchett and Moorhead each earned all-region honors in the pole vault, with Pritchett claiming the top spot on the podium at last month's conference championships.
Curry garnered all-region recognition in the high jump, posting a school-record and provisional nationally qualifying mark of 1.69 meters earlier this season. Cleveland earned all-region honors in the javelin after finishing second at the conference championships with a mark of 32.09 meters.
Lees-McRae is expected to return 21 athletes from this year's squad, including rising seniors Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.), Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.), Auburn Lowe (Swain County, N.C.), Genay Miller (Woodstock, Ga.), Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.), and Karina Ortiz (Hickory, N.C.).
