Watauga High senior David Martin has made it official. He has signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Lenior-Rhyne University next season. Martin has put together a stellar senior season for the Pioneers. Lenior-Rhyne is a Division II school in Hickory, N.C., an a member of the South

Atlantic Conference. He's batting .383 with two home runs, 21 runs-batted-in, 25 runs scored, and ten stolen bases. And for a catcher, Martin is second on the team in stolen bases.
"Having a little adversity last season really helped him out," said WHS coach Pete Hardee. "He's a great player and a natural hitter. But things came a little too easy for him in the past. Last year, he struggled a little bit. But he finished the season strong, and he's done a great job for us this year."
Martin actually saw his batting average dip down to .133 last season. But after he was moved into the lead-off spot in the batting order, Martin turned things around and finished the year hitting .264. His batting average hasn't dipped below .332 this season.
He's batting an even .500 in the post-season with two doubles, two triples and three RBI. Martin, who came out for the football team this past fall, was also an honorable mention all-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference performer.
The Pioneers travel to T.C. Roberson to play the No.1 team in the state in Class 4A. Our coverage begins at 6:25 p.m. on Oldies 100.7 FM.
