The South Caldwell High baseball team knocked off A.C. Reynolds 9-5 Tuesday night in a second-round Class 4A state playoff game in Sawmills, N.C. Garrison Franklin, who got the win, helped his own cause with two hits, including a double and drove in two runs. Pitching wise, Franklin gave up five hits

and struck out six. The Spartans (24-2) jumped on top with four runs in the second inning. The Spartans will play either Mooresville or Cornelius-Hough in the sectional finals Friday night at home. Mooresville and Hough were suspended by rain in the fourth inning. They will complete that game tonight.
Hickory was not as fortunate. Asheville grabbed an early 4-0 lead  and defeated the Red Tornadoes 4-3 in a second-round Class 3A state playoff game in Hickory Tuesday night.
Starting pitcher Ethan Wallenius-Caldwell of the Cougars held Hickory (19-8) to just one hit through the first five innings of the game. He struck out eight men and he retired the side in order three times. Zach Jarrett had Hickory's only hit, a single in the third inning.
The Red Tornadoes scored three runs on three hits and took advantage of two walks and a wild pitch to make it interesting in the sixth.
Asheville will face Mountain Athletic Conference foe North Buncombe on Friday. North Bumcombe advanced by knocking off Lawndale Burns 2-0 Tuesday night.
In softball, Lexi Shubert scattered two hits and struck out 14 batters as Fred T. Foard defeated Crest 2-0 in Newton. The Tigers will now face Asheville-Erwin a sectional title game Friday night.
