The Hickory Crawdads fell to the Hagerstown Suns, 12-4, before 1,048 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday night. The game resembled a slugfest as both team combined for six runs in the first inning. The Suns (20-15) jumped out to

a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matthew Skole hightlighted the frame with a two-run blast over the left-field wall.
The Crawdads (19-16) responded with a three-run rally of their own in the bottom of the first.  Hanser Alberto had the big blow with a two-run double that made it 3-2; Drew Robinson drove in Alberto with an RBI single to right field, tying the game at 3-3.
But the Suns took over from there. Hagerstown regained the lead in the top of the third.  With one out, Billy Burns walked and advanced to third on a single by Jason Martinson. Then losing pitcher Santo Perez (2-2) victimized himself when he threw behind Martinson at first on a pick-off attempt. Martinson broke for second and got there safely. In the meantime, Burns scored easily from third for a 4-3 lead. Martinson advanced to third as Burns beat the throw to the plate. A run-scoring single by Skole, and an RBI double by Steven Souza, made it 6-3.
The Suns added three more runs in the fourth-and-fifth innings. Justin Miller had a solo home run in the fourth that made it 7-3; Souza had a run-scoring double, and Miller drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that made it 9-3.
An RBI single by Trever Adams of the Crawdads made it 9-4 in the sixth, but the Suns put the game away thanks to Skole and Souza, who hit back-to-back home runs to start the seventh inning. Leading 11-4, Skole closed out the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth.
