The Hickory Crawdads dropped the series opener against the Hagerstown Suns, 5-3, before 547 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night. The game was delayed for 1:07 during the bottom of the sixth inning due to inclement
weather. Hagerstown (19-15) jumped in front with a pair of runs in the first two innings of the game. Back-to-back doubles by Cutter Dykstra and Billy Burns to start the game gave Suns a 1-0 lead. A walk and a fly ball enabled Burns to reach third base before Adrian Nieto's RBI single gave Hagerstown a 2-0.
A solo home run by DH Justin Miller in the top of second inning made it 3-0, but the 'Dads (19-15) responded in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Luis Sardinas and a run-scoring double by Chris Grayson made it 3-2. A sacrifice fly by Jordan Akin in the fourth tied the game at 3-3.
After a rain delay in the sixth inning that took an hour and seven minutes, the Suns regained the lead in the top of the eighth. An RBI single by J.P. Ramirez gave the Suns a 4-3 lead, and a run-scoring single by Miller with two outs made it 5-3.
Aaron Bennett, who picked up his third save of the year, retired all six men he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to close things out for the Suns.
