Watauga High senior Michael Smith closed out his prep career on Friday at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Men's Tennis Championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh. Smith (19-3 in singles play), who has signed with Appalachian State University, was elminiated Friday night by Graham Duncan of Apex in the quarterfinal round.
Duncan defeated Smith in straight sets, 5-7, 2-6. Smith, the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference singles champion, a regional finalist and a three-time state qualifier, defeated Warren Bryan of Greensboro-Page, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round.

HUSKIES PRODUCE TWO STATE QUALIFIERS AT STATE TRACK MEET
The Ashe County women's track team produced two place finishers on Friday at the North Carolina High School Athletic Associaton Class 2A State Track Meet at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro. Mackenzie Domske finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.58 seconds; Aspen Domske finished tenth in the long jump (15-04.50). The Ashe County women finished in a 38th-place tie with four points; the men's team did not score. Glenn Bailey was their top finisher. He was ninth in the 3,200-meter run (10:14.39). Carrboro won the women's championship; Cedar Ridge won the men's title.
