'Dads Score Twice In Ninth In 4-3 Loss PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads just can't avoid falling behind early. That was the case again Friday night. For the third time in three days, the Crawdads (16-11) spotted the Greensboro Grasshoppers a 4-0 lead. And like they did the previous two days, Hickory rallied, but fell short in a 4-3 loss at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro. The Grasshoppers (19-8),

who boast the best home record (11-2) in the South Atlantic League, got a huge lift from Matt Smith, who belted a three-run homer---his third in three days---in the bottom of the first inning.
A sacrifice fly by Brent Keys in the second inning gave the Grasshoppers a 4-0 lead. Jordan Akins, who had a two-run homer in Thursday's loss, got Hickory on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. And it stayed that way as winning pitcher Adam Conley (3-0) kept the Crawdads in check. Well, at least until the ninth inning came along.
The Crawdads rallied for a pair of runs against James Nygren. Akins led off the inning with an infield single. He scored moments later on Drew Robinson's RBI double that made it 4-2;, Jeremy Williams followed with a run-scoring single that scored Robinson to make 4-3. But Nygren, who picked up his sixth save of the season, struck out Joe Maloney and he enduced Trever Adams into a game-ending double play.
