A two-run rally by the Hickory Crawdads in the top of the ninth wasn't enough as Greensboro picked up a 7-3 win Thursday night at NewBridge Bank Park. And like they did Wednesday afternoon, the Crawdads (16-10) fell behind early as
the Grasshoppers (18-8) opened up an early 4-0 lead. The Grasshoppers (18-8) broke through in the bottom of the third. Wilfredo Gimenez led off with a triple and quickly and scored on an RBI single by Ryan McIntyre. McIntyre moved to second on an errant pick-off throw and scored on an RBI double by Austin Barnes.
Brent Keys reached on an error when losing pitcher Luke Jackson, covering first base, dropped a throw from first baseman Jhonny Gomez. Keys reached first safely on the error, and Barnes scored from third, making it 3-0. After Keys was caught stealing, Matt Smith homered for a 4-0 lead.
Trailing 5-1, the 'Dads finally got on the board in the top of the eighth. With one away, Luis Sardinas singled and reached second base on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a base hit by Rougned Odor. Hanser Alberto plated Sardinas with an RBI grounder to short.
A two-run homer by Aaron Senne in the bottom of the eighth gave the Grasshoppers a 7-1 lead and basically put the game out of reach. Jordan Akins smacked a two-run consolation home run in the top of the ninth. Despite giving up Akins' two-run shot, James Nygren settled down and got the next two hitters for his fifth save of the year.
