Appalachian State University baseball’s Will Callaway (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) is one of 50 shortstops nationwide on the initial watch list for the 2012 Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Thursday. The Wallace Award is presented annually to college baseball’s top

shortstop. Callaway is a top performer for one of college baseball’s best offenses with a .359 batting average (seventh in the Southern Conference), 10 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI. He also ranks 29th nationally with 22 stolen bases and is among college baseball’s top defensive shortstops with spectacular range and a terrific arm in the field. With 117 assists and 28 double plays, Callaway is an anchor of an Appalachian defense that leads the SoCon with a .972 team fielding percentage.
The junior from Greenville, S.C. is the SoCon’s only representative on the 50-member Wallace Award watch list. Callaway and the 28th-ranked Mountaineers (32-10, 16-5 SoCon) look to maintain their grip on first place in the SoCon standings when they host a three-game series versus UNC Greensboro this weekend. The series opener is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at ASU’s Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
