An propsal that would have barred parochial schools from continuing its member with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association didn't get the necessary votes needed to pass Thursday afternoon. The meeting and voting session took place at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The amendment needed 293 (three-fourths of the association's membership) to

pass. But only 285 schools voted on the issue; and of the schools that did vote, 234 voted in favor of banning parochial schools. One-hundred and nine schools elected not to vote.
Back in April, six principals from Rowan County submitted the proposal to the NCHSAA Articles of Incorporation and Byl, which led to Thursday's vote. Member schools had one week to vote on whether or not the proposal should pass. The votes were tabulated by the NCHSAA and the results were announced at its annual membership meeting Thursday afternoon.
The Board also voted in favor of charter schools, and they will remain members of the assocation. And the football pod system that was instituted last season will be utilized again in 2012.
