Appalachian State University softball dropped the rubber match versus Samford, 5-4, on Sunday at Bulldog Field in its regular season finale. The Bulldogs (13-37, 6-15 SoCon) earned their first series win over the Mountaineers (21-23, 9-13 SoCon) and are now 5-9 all-time against ASU. Both teams were

able to get on the board quickly with each scoring a run in the first inning.  Appalachian's Megan Rembielak singled up the middle and moved to second on a Meghan Smith single to left field.  ASU executed a perfect double steal which allowed Rembielak to score on an error by the left fielder.  Samford's Alex Adams tied the game up 1-1 on a solo home run to left center.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the second on a three-run homer by Madison Dickey.
The Mountaineers responded in the third frame with two-runs of their own.  Rembielak slapped her second single of the day and was brought home on a two-run home run over the left field foul pole by Smith to put ASU down 4-3.
Michelle Lighton led off the fourth inning with a screaming single to right center and was pinch ran for by Racquel Cooke.  Cooke advanced to third on sacrifice bunt and on a ground out to second.  Sarah Warnock tied the game up, 4-4, with a single to left field.
Samford scored the eventual game winning run in the sixth inning.  The Bulldogs put runners on the corners with one out and scored the game winning run on failed pickoff to first which allowed the runner at third to score.
The Bulldogs out hit the Mountaineers 9-7 but ASU was led by Rembielak and Smith with a pair of hits apiece.
Riley Carter started for Appalachian and gave up four runs on four hits in two innings.  Caitlin Wainright came in relief and scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run in four innings.
The Mountaineers return to action on May 9 for the Southern Conference tournament.  ASU will host the conference tournament which runs from May 9-12 at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
