RiverDogs Out-Slug Crawdads, 14-9 PDF Print

The Charleston RiverDogs topped the Hickory Crawdads, 14-9, before 2,441 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night. After Charleston (16-5) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the 'Dads (14-8) came right back with a pair in the bottom of the inning. followed with an RBI double to right field that scored Sardinas and moved Grayson to third.  One out later, Hanser Alberto drove in a run with a ground ball to third base making it 3-2.
Tyler Austin of the RiverDogs homered in the top of the third for a 4-2 lead. But Hickory responded with a six-run rally in the bottom of the inning for an 8-4 lead. Odor belted a two-run homer that tied the game, tying the game at 4-4. After Zach Cone singled and advanced all the way to third on a stolen base with a throwing error by C Gary Sanchez on the play, he scored on Drew Robinson's RBI single to right field that gave Hickory a 5-4 lead. Jeremy Williams singled Robinson to second before Joe Maloney brought him in with an RBI single.  After Jhonny Gomez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sardinas skied a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Williams to make it 7-4.  With Fred Lewis, who eventually got the win in relief, taking over on the mound with runners at first and third, Gomez broke for second on the first pitch to Grayson.  Gomez got caught in a rundown allowing Maloney to score on a delayed double steal for an 8-4 lead.
The RiverDogs responded with six runs of their own (all unearned) in the top of the sixth.  With two on and two out, RBI singles by Mason Williams and Cito Culver brought Charleston within two runs, 8-6.  After Dante Bichette, Jr. worked a walk to load the bases, Austin quickly unloaded them with a grand slam over the left field fence that gave the RiverDogs the lead for good at 10-8.
A run-scoring double by Williams in the seventh scored Robinson to make it 10-9. But the RiverDogs padded the lead with two runs in the eighth inning, and two more in the ninth. An RBI triple by Culver and an RBI grounder by Austin, who finished with seven RBIs on the day, plated two runs in the eighth; a sacrifice fly by Williams and an RBI double by Culver in the top of the ninth closed out the scoring for Charleston. Nick McBride suffered the loss in relief.
