Richardson, Bowers Qualify for Tennis Regionals PDF Print

Ashe County High senior Zeb Richardson, who turned in a sensational season on the basketball court leading the Huskies to 25 wins and the second-round of the state playoffs, has turned in a stellar campaign on the tennis courts this spring. Richardson and junior Sam Bowers qualified for the Class 2A Western Regionals thanks to a

strong showing at the Mountain Valley Conference Championship match Tuesday at Elkin.
Richardson made it to the finals with a pair of wins in the first two rounds of match play. He defeated Alex Sales of Forbush, 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round; and he followed that up with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Steven Furr of Wilkes Central. Richardson was bested by Garrett Lakey of Wilkes Central in the semifinals in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Despite the loss, Richardson qualiied for regional play, which begins Friday, May 4 in Lexington, by making it to the semifinal round. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play qualify for regionls.
Bowers made it to regionals by knocking off Kent McCollum of Forbush 7-6, 6-0; he lost to Lakey in the semifinal round, 0-6, 0-6.
