Councell Making Strides With Irish PDF Print

Ben Councell, a standout football player at A.C. Reynolds High School during his prep days, is slowly making his mark as a member of the University of Notre Dame football team. Councell, an outside linebacker now in his second year with the Fighting Irish,

made four tackles, including one for loss, in the Notre Dame Blue-Gold spring game last Saturday.
Councell, who was the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, made 188 tackles (141 solo stops) and 25 tackles-for-loss his senior year.
He played in the Shrine Bowl in 2010, made 13 tackles, had a quarterback sack and he blocked punt. For his efforts, Councell was named a top 10 player of the game. He was named all state his senior year, and he was an honorable mention choice on the All-Southern Team, selected by the Orlando Sentenial.
Councell also blocked a potential game-winning field goal in the Class 4A state championship game against Harnett Central preseving a 14-13 win for the Rockets in 2009.
The Watauga High football team will kick-off the 2012 season at A.C. Reynolds on Friday night, August 17 in Asheville. The Rockets were 6-5 last year and lost to Sun Valley in the opening round of the state playoffs.
