UPDATED: Middlebrook Sets Record, WHS Women Finish Second PDF Print

Watauga High junior Darby Middlebrook backboned the women's track team to a second-place finish Saturday at the Blue Ridge Classic at A.C. Reynolds High in Asheville. Middlebrook, who finished second at the Class 4A state cross country meet last fall and won a state title in the 1,600-meter run during the indoor track season, shattered the record books

by winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.67. That effort broke the old record of 2:18.44 set by MacKenzie Pierce of Forsyth County Day in 2004. Middlebrook also anchored WHS's 4x800 relay team to a first-place finish by winning that event in 10:13.05.
The Pioneers won five events and produced 18 top-ten finishes. The Pioneers finished second with 113 points; ACR won the meet with a team score of 132.5. Anna Schulz-Coulon won the 400-meterĀ runĀ (1:00.91); Madison Harman won the 3,200 (11:29.83); and WHS also won the 4x400 relay in 4:13.09.
Doria Kosmala turned in a fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:25.17); Julia Roberts was fifth (2:26.27). Hailey Middlebrook captured third in the 1,600 (5:29.93); Taylor Drummonds had two top-five finishes. She was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.53) and she finished second on the pole vault with an effort of ten feet. Callin Burril of ACR won the pole vault by clearing the bar at ten feet in fewer attempts. Allison Seramur finished third in the pole vault (9-6) and Kenyon Hall finished fourth (nine feet). Tara Trivette was fourth in the in the high jump (4-10), WHS finished fourth in the 4x100 relay (55.61), and the Pioneers finished second in the 4x200 (1:51.25).
The WHS men finished sixth with 48 points. Mooresville won the meet with 76.5. The Pioneers won one event and produced 11 top-ten finishes. Reid Harris won the pole vault, clearing the bar with a jump of 14-feet, six-inches; Max Ruble finished second with a jump of 13 feet. Bryan Brackney turned in a second-place finish in the 1,600 (4:34.97), Josh Anderson finished fourth in 4:42.50; Stephen Schmal finished fourth in the 400 (52.14) and WHS finished fourth in the 4x800 relay (8:59.70).
The Pioneers will host the High Country Inviational Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium; the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championships will be held at Lenior-Rhyne University in Hickory on Wednesday, May 2.




PANTHERS HANG ON AGAINST INDIANS




The Hibriten High baseball team scored six times in the second inning and hung on to beat St. Stephens 7-5 Saturday on the road in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game. The win also prevented Saint from clinching a tie for third place. The Indians (5-5 NW3A/4A; 9-8), the Panthers (5-5; 8-10) and Hickory (5-5; 13-6) are involved in a three-way tie for third place with two games left in the regular season. The Indians have also lost six of their last seven games.
Watauga High travels to Hibriten Tuesday night. Ethan Greene is the scheduled starter for the Pioneers (8-2 in league play; 12-7 overall). The Pioneers have won six in a row in league play and four in a row overall; WHS has also won five straight against the Panthers since they became league members in 2009-10.
