Lenoir-Rhyne University Head Softball Coach Shena Hollar has announced the addition of three players for the 2013 season with the signing of Maryann Hoskins, Chelsey Long and Anne Marie Lackey. Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) plays softball at Havelock High School and for the North Carolina
Dominators Elite squad. As a prep, Hoskins earned all-conference and all-area honors.
"She (Hoskins) will be a good contrast with our other pitchers," said Hollar. "I look for her to develop into a very successful pitcher for us."
Long (Nakina, N.C.) is an all-district, All-Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference and all-state performer for South Columbus High School. In 2011, Long was named the North Carolina 2A Softball Player Of The Year for the East and is a three-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball and softball). Long is also part of the Cape Fear Storm (White) summer travel team.
"Chelsey (Long) can swing the bat well and will play a middle infield role for us," said Hollar. "She brings a lot of athleticism to our program."
Lackey (Fallston, N.C.) is an All-South Mountain 2A/3A Conference honoree at Burns High School and will be honored by the Cleveland County Sports Hall Of Fame for softball next week. In addition, Lackey plays for the Catawba Valley Storm summer travel team.
"She (Lackey) will be a solid utility player for the Bears with her main position being second base," said Hollar. "She has a good contact swing that could allow her to hit in the top of the lineup, possibly at lead-off.
Lenoir-Rhyne (42-11, 14-4), the 21st-ranked team in NCAA Division II and third-ranked squad in the region, will be the No. 1 seed in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament.
The tournament begins tomorrow at Red Edmonds Field in Greeneville, Tenn., as L-R takes on eighth-seeded Mars Hill (22-22, 7-11) in the quarterfinal round beginning at 6:00 p.m.
